THE GELGOTAS MUSICAL DYNASTY — A NEW LRT DOCUMENTARY

A new documentary produced by Lithuanian National Television (LRT) in 2026 explores the story of the Gelgotas family, one of Lithuania’s remarkable musical dynasties. The documentary is part of LRT’s “Dinastijos” (“Dynasties”) series and offers a personal look at a family whose life has been shaped by music across generations.

At the center of the documentary is composer Gediminas Gelgotas, internationally known for his distinctive musical language and as the founder, artistic leader and conductor of the NICO ensemble. His musical journey, however, began within a remarkable family tradition.

The Gelgotas family includes several generations of professional musicians. Rasa Gelgotienė is a renowned choir conductor, while Valentinas Gelgotas was a longtime flutist with the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra. His eldest son, Giedrius Gelgotas, followed in his footsteps as a flutist. Justė Gelgotaitė is an oboist, while the youngest son, Gediminas Gelgotas, became a composer, conductor and leader of NICO.

The documentary also reveals the more personal and humorous side of growing up in a musical household. Recalling his childhood with a smile, Gediminas Gelgotas tells LRT: “We would apologize to the neighbors and simply keep playing.” The story captures something essential about the family’s relationship with music — it was not simply a profession, but an inseparable part of everyday life.

The documentary is now available to watch online on LRT Mediateka.
