Gediminas Gelgotas has received another significant creative recognition, having been commissioned to compose a new large-scale work—marking an important milestone both in his career and in Lithuania’s cultural life.
The commission comes from the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre in preparation for the ceremonial opening of Lithuania’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The premiere is scheduled for January 7, 2027—a symbolic moment when Lithuania’s cultural voice will resonate within a broader European context. The new work will serve as a central artistic axis of a high-level cultural diplomacy event taking place in Vilnius.
His previous large-scale work, Vilnius Sarabande (2023), commissioned by the National Philharmonic to mark the 700th anniversary of Vilnius, attracted exceptional public interest and was presented in several repeat premiere performances—an uncommon occurrence in the field of contemporary music.
At the core of Gelgotas’s work lies a distinctive musical language that combines elements of minimalism with a broader, multi-layered stylistic approach. His music brings together refined sonic aesthetics, strong rhythmic energy, and a clear melodic line. The composer often moves beyond purely musical expression, integrating visual, spatial, and performative elements into a unified artistic experience, while maintaining emotional immediacy and a strong connection with the audience.
